Emergency numbers Canada
The main emergency number
Call 911 if you need urgent medical treatment or in case of emergency. In case of all fire, police or medical emergencies, call 911 to contact help. Almost all areas of Canada are covered by this emergency help line; however there may be some remote rural areas where there are local numbers to call. All urban and suburban areas are covered by the 911 code system. All phone calls to 9-1-1 are free, including calls made by pay phone or cell phone. Please note that calls must be of an urgent nature, such as: if you have witnessed a crime that has just occurred or is still in progress; if you see an uncontrolled fire; if medical help is immediately required; if someone is trapped, drowning or taken a serious fall (think life and limb); if something catastrophic has occurred that has the potential to become much worse or could endanger human life (e.g.: landslide on a road, tree down over power lines, flooding) . Do not call 9-1-1 to obtain information, to make a complaint, to report a power outage, or for highway or weather information. The police will respond and you will be fined for abusing emergency services. When you reach the 9-1-1 centre, you will likely be asked to state the nature of your emergency: fire, police, or ambulance. You will then be asked to give the full details of your emergency. DO NOT HANG UP ON 9-1-1 until the 9-1-1 operator tells you to; only the 9-1-1 operator knows when enough information has been gathered about your emergency and its location. You should not hang up even if you feel you dialed 9-1-1 in error; in many jurisdictions, 9-1-1 operators are required to take action on all 9-1-1 calls, even if the caller hung up the phone without speaking.
In an emergency on a highway or a secondary road, remain calm and, if you don’t have a cell phone, try to locate the nearest emergency phone. The response for accidents in the major roads is usually very fast. If you’re physically capable you can go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. Note that emergency treatments in hospitals are not free - check our section on hospitals for further information. Pharmacies
If you urgently need medication, the pharmacy emergency section in local newspapers or Yellow Pages lists the addresses of the pharmacies that are open outside of normal business hours. You can also visit any local pharmacy, which will list the address of the closest one open late in the window or on the door. Doctors
If you’re ill and can’t go to a doctors office, you can call your doctor for advice. Note, however, that most doctors in the U.S. don’t make house calls. In some cities there are special ‘house call’ services which will send a doctor to your home 24 hours a day.
Toronto’s residents and visitors have access to 9‑1‑1 services in up to 240 languages. When calling 9‑1‑1, the Emergency Services call taker can access a translation service if needed. It is helpful, but not necessary, to be able to state the language required to the call taker in English. This will assist the call taker in connecting to the most appropriate translator. Examples of when to call 9-1-1:
Events that involve an immediate threat to a person or property: screams, attacks, gunshots, fires, car accidents with injuries or other medical emergencies
A substantive, in-progress crime such as a fight, break and enter (if there is a suspect on scene) or a report of an impaired driver
A serious crime that has just occurred (examples: sexual assault or robbery)
A suspicious circumstance that may indicate an imminent criminal act (examples: prowler, vandal)
Non-emergency situations Canada
Examples of non-emergency calls
Reporting a crime with no suspect (example: theft of a licence plate)
Reporting a crime with suspect, but suspect is not on the scene (example: fraud)
Reporting a serious crime with suspect, but with a lengthy delay (example: assault that occurred last night at a bar)
Non-emergency in progress (example: noisy party)
On-going crime issues or crimes that are not in-progress (examples: graffiti or ongoing drug dealing with no suspect on scene)
A suspicious circumstance that may indicate an ongoing criminal activity (example: suspected drug lab)
Using 911 as non-emergency phone number.
If you are unsure if your situation is an emergency, dial 9-1-1. Emergency call takers will help determine if immediate action is required or if you should hang-up and dial the non-emergency line. Calling 9-1-1 for a non-emergency situation ties up important lifelines meant for people or property in immediate jeopardy or when a crime is in progress. If you call 9-1-1 for a non-emergency matter, it will not result in a faster response. Emergency situations are always given priority over situations where police response is not urgent or time sensitive and emergency operators will not take non-emergency reports on 9-1-1. Please also note that 9-1-1 call takers cannot transfer your call to the non-emergency line. You will have to hang-up and dial the ten-digit non-emergency number directly.
Travel INFO phone number Canada
5-1-1 is a transportation and traffic information telephone hotline in some regions of the United States and Canada. Travelers can dial the three-digit telephone number on landlines and most mobile phones. The number has also extended to be the default name of many state and provincial transportation department road conditions Web sites, such as Wisconsin's site. It is an example of an N11 code, part of the North American Numbering Plan. 5-1-1 services in the United States are organized by state or region. Some 5-1-1 services are limited to information for drivers regarding road conditions and traffic. Other services have a wider scope, also providing information on public transport, carpooling and other services. The Intelligent Transportation Systems Society of Canada (ITS Canada) has brought together a consortium, the Canada 511 Consortium, to help get 5-1-1 service established in Canada. ITS Canada has initiated an effort to establish the 511 telephone number as an automated 'weather and traveller information service' number in Canada. ... ITS Canada has developed a 'Canada 511 Consortium
Other non-emergency phone number
311 is a special telephone number supported in many communities in Canada and the United States. The number provides access to non-emergency municipal services. The number format follows the N11 code for a group of short, special-purpose local numbers as designated in the North American Numbering Plan. The telephone number 3-1-1 creates a central hub for local subscribers to access a variety of city services. It is intended, in part, to divert routine inquiries and non-urgent community concerns from the 9-1-1 number which is reserved for emergency service. A promotional website for 3-1-1 in Akron described the distinction as follows: "Burning building? Call 9-1-1. Burning question? Call 3-1-1
Examples of calls intended for 3-1-1 include:
abandoned vehicles in roadway,
code and housing violations,
dead animal removal,
debris in roadway,
non-working streetlamps, parking meters, traffic lights,
Parking Law Enforcement,
Parks and recreation concerns,
potholes, sinkholes and utility holes in streets,
public safety concerns,
rat or rodent infestation,
reporting stolen vehicles.
112 in Canada for EU Members
112 is the emergency number in all 28 EU member states, as well as other European countries and elsewhere. People in danger can call 112 24/7 to reach the fire brigade, medical assistance and the police. The European emergency number is free and can be reached by landlines as well as mobiles. The increased levels of Europeans travelling within the EU led to the Council of the EU introducing a common emergency number in all states to avoid the need of remembering different national numbers depending on one’s location. 112 is an easy number to remember and the only number one needs to know when travelling in the EU, a great tool when considering the state of distress people find themselves when in an emergency.

Feb 4, 2014 @15:18 MSTGot the standard automated message - something along the lines of: 'Congratulations! For being a valued Telus customer, we have a prize. Press 1 to accept." I was busy today and didn't have time to play around with them. The BIG DIFFERENCE between this call and the numerous others I have received in the past, is that they are now spoofing an actual valid & working phone number. The number actually belongs to a company who has no clue or connection to this phone-spamm
I couldn't find any info for this specific number, but there are two facts: people do search for this number which can be seen from different similar pages, and there are more similar numbers reported (just last 2 or 3 digits alternated) - so I assume this
I got the call today afternoon and heard similar message "that my telephone# is selected for a free gift and please press 1" . I hung up immediately. These are spam.
Ssiiighhh. Again, the identity and purpose of the caller has not been established. Without details the FTC can't really do much with a complaint, nor do we know it has jurisdiction. The DNC registry exempts all non-sales calls besides. So let's just wait for the OP or another call recipient to fill in the blanks.
